After being awarded a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts for the 1996 performance of “The Birth of Anne Frank/The Ascension of Marsha P. Johnson” at Performance Space 122, Anohni asked accompanying musicians to record several songs she had written in the early 1990s.

As part of William Basinski’s composition “Life on Mars,” the ensemble performed as “Antony and the Johnsons” for the first time at The Kitchen in 1997. In 1999, the group began to perform more frequently in New York City venues like Joe’s Pub and The Knitting Factory.

David Tibet of Current 93, a British experimental musician, offered to release the tape through his Durtro record label after hearing it; the debut album, Antony and the Johnsons was released in 2000.

Anohni’s husband: Is Anohni married?

She/her pronouns are used by Anohni, a transgender person.

In a November 2014 interview with Flavorwire, she said: “My nearest relatives and friends refer to me with feminine pronouns. I haven’t ordered the media to do anything in particular. I prefer “she” in my private life. I believe that words are crucial. A person’s spirit, life, and contribution are honored when they are addressed by the gender of their choice. For me, “He” is an oblique pronoun that negates me.” The details of her relationship are scarcer.
