The voice of the main character Tiana, who is Disney’s first African-American princess, is provided by Rose in the 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog, for which she is well known.
At the time, Rose remarked, “Tiana is the first American princess in addition to being the first black princess.
Therefore, the relevance and scope are more than most people ever know.” Rose continued by expressing her hope that through appearing in the movie, young children with brown skin will feel more empowered.
The filmmakers claim that it is purely accidental that the movie came out in 2009, the same year that Barack and Michelle Obama took office. Many commenters, however, remarked on how the coincidence supported the favorable picture of African-Americans.
