AngloGold Ashanti has commissioned and turned over a nine-unit classroom block at Sanso to the Ghana Education Service (GES) as part of ongoing efforts by the Obuasi mine to improve educational outcomes in Obuasi.

The GHC4.8 million project will take the place of the dilapidated Sanso Methodist school building that was constructed many years ago. A library, an ICT center, a sick bay, and a canteen are all features of the new building. As stated in their 10-year SEDP, it is one of the ten new school blocks that AGA plans to construct.

The Obuasi West Constituency Member of Parliament Kwaku Kwarteng, the Chief Executive of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly Hon. Elijah Adansi-Bonah, the Edubiasehemaa Nana Akua Dwum II, and the Deputy Minister of Education John Ntim Fordjour were present at the event to commission the project.

The Sanso school project, according to AngloGold Ashanti Senior Manager of Community Relations Africa, Emmanuel Baidoo, is a fulfillment of the mine’s commitment to support and invest in the hopes and dreams of children in its operating areas so they can have a bright future through high-quality education.

July 2022 saw the introduction of AngloGold Ashanti’s extensive 10-year socio-economic development plan for Obuasi. The mining company committed to investing heavily in education as part of the plan. Mr. Baidoo claims that since the mine was renovated in 2019, the company has made numerous investments in education, and the impressive school block at Sanso is just one more.

In order to improve school supervision, he said, the company has sponsored the training of more than 500 teachers through its Basic Education Improvement Program and given motorbikes to Obuasi’s Circuit Supervisors and Inspectors. Once more, he disclosed that the business has so far successfully worked with the Otumfuo Charity Foundation to provide 140,000 copies of textbooks that have been approved by the NaCCA to every public school in Obuasi.
