On October 16, 1925, Lansbury was born to an upper-middle-class family. Despite the fact that her origin has frequently been given as Poplar, East London, she has dismissed this, expressing that while she had tribal associations with Poplar, she was brought into the world in Official’s Park, Focal London. Charlotte Lillian McIldowie’s mother was Irish Moyna Macgill, who was born in Belfast and went by the name Charlotte Lillian McIldowie. She was an actress who appeared in a number of films as well as on stage in London’s West End.

Edgar Lansbury, a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and former mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar, was her wealthy English timber merchant and politician father. She considered George Lansbury, the leader of the Labour Party, to be “a giant in my youth” and felt “awed” by him as her paternal grandfather. Isolde, Angela’s older half-sister, was Moyna’s daughter from her previous marriage to Reginald Denham.

The Lansbury moved from their Poplar apartment to a house in Mill Hill, North London, in January 1930, when Angela was four years old when her mother gave birth to twin boys named Bruce and Edgar. They would move to a small, rural farm in Berrick Salome, Oxfordshire, on weekends.
