The late André Watts was a famous American classical pianist and a respected professor at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Throughout his astonishing career, which lasted more than six decades, he irrevocably changed the face of classical music.

Watts received multiple honors in recognition of his talent and commitment, including the 1964 Grammy Award for Best New Classical Artist. In 2020, he was additionally elected to the American Philosophical Society, underscoring his important contributions to the fields of culture and the arts.

Watts passed on Wednesday at his home in Bloomington at the age of 77. His cause of death is a result of prostate cancer, his manager, Linda Marder, said Friday. Watts joined the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2004.

Watts was born in Nuremberg, Allied-occupied Germany, on June 20, 1946. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2016, and died of the disease at his home in Bloomington, Indiana, on July 12, 2023.
