Andre Onana, the goalkeeper for Cameroon, has received a lot of flak for his participation in the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire, but it looks like the former Inter Milan stopper will get the chance to represent his country at the continental competition.
According to a deal agreed during discussions between Manchester United and the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), the Red Devils goalkeeper will remain with the team until after their crucial Premier League encounter against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, as ESPN reported.
Club managers have been bothered by AFCON, which occurs in the midst of the domestic European season, since its inception. Some view it as a distraction that costs them crucial points in important games and valuable weeks with their finest players.
In a video that was posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Manchester United goalie can be seen flying to Yamoussoukro, Cameroon’s capital, aboard an allegedly hired aircraft.
Man United and Tottenham Hotspurs drew 2-2 in the English Premier League, but Onana swiftly changed the game after conceding twice. The 2023 AFCON opening match between Cameroon and Guinea is scheduled for Monday, January 15, at 17:00 GMT.
Onana, however, will miss the match because he was supposed to arrive late, according to sports journalist Peter Hall. Onana had refused to report to training as planned following Man United’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Wigan Athletic.
Upon arriving at Old Trafford in the recent offseason from Inter Milan, Onana has experienced his fair share of mishaps.
