Amnon Rubinstein, a former lawmaker and Israel Prize recipient who played a key role in shaping Israel’s legal and political landscape died at 92.
Amnon Rubinstein’s death may have contributed to his old age, he may have died of natural causes. however, The Rubinstein family has yet to reveal the cause of his death. Amnon Rubinstein is considered to be the closest thing the country has to a constitutional founding father.
Rubinstein authored two of Israel’s rights-granting Basic Laws: Human Dignity and Liberty and Basic Law: Freedom of Vocation. Rubinstein was born in 1931 to Polish immigrant parents in Tel Aviv.
After serving as a captain in the IDF, he studied economics, international relations, and law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was called to the bar in 1963. He received a PhD in law from the London School of Economics in 1966.
Rubinstein lived to hear his obituary read in 2000 when due to a practical joke, Knesset speaker Avraham Burg was led to believe that he had died. Rubinstein, hospitalized at the time for a minor complaint, saw his eulogy broadcast on television.
Rubinstein died on 18 January 2024, at the age of 92. There’s practically no one within this current coalition government who understands these basic laws for humanity. May Israel’s Constitutional Law founder, Amnon Rubinstein, rest in peace and his memory be a blessing.
