An incident at the Electoral Commission office in Ofaakor near Kasoa in the Central Region has led to the remand of Usman Haruna by the Accra High Court.
Usman Haruna is accused of stabbing Ato Koomson, the son of Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, during a scuffle.
The altercation occurred on Sunday, June 2, 2024, before the commencement of the day’s activities at the EC office. Police intervened and arrested Haruna amidst the chaos that ensued after the stabbing of Mr. Koomson. Haruna is now in police custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
Eyewitnesses report that the conflict arose from a disagreement regarding the queuing process of voters seeking to transfer their votes to the constituency. Unfortunately, the disagreement escalated into violence, resulting in Ato Koomson being stabbed in the chest. He was swiftly taken to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for medical attention.
Moreover, three members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were also injured during the altercation and subsequently admitted to the Kasoa Polyclinic for treatment.
The accused, Usman Haruna, is expected to appear in court again on June 19, 2024, where the case will be further examined to determine the next course of action in the legal process. The court will continue to hear testimonies and gather evidence to ensure justice is served in this unfortunate incident.
