Russian activist and Putin critic Alexey Navalny has passed away in the prison at the age of 47.

Alexey Navalny died on Friday, February 16, 2024, and the Federal Penitentiary Service announced that Navalny had died in prison in Yamalo-Nenets, after taking a walk and feeling unwell that morning. The prison statement claimed that “All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out but did not yield positive results… The paramedics confirmed the death of the convict.” Navalny’s spokeswoman said on social media that his team could not immediately confirm his death until his lawyer visits the prison.

Alexey Navalny was born in 1976, and rose to prominence in the early 2010s, challenging Putin’s administration and gaining popularity among Russians disillusioned with the ruling regime. His confrontational stance led to numerous clashes with Russian authorities, including a poisoning with a nerve agent, Novichok, in 2020, which he survived and attributed to Putin.
