On November 15, 1921, Jefferson was born in Detroit, Michigan, the eldest child of Alexander Jefferson and Jane White Jefferson.
He was an American Air Force officer best known as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen’s 332nd Fighter Group.

On August 12, 1944, he was shot down on his 19th mission over Toulon, southern France, while bombing a radar facility.
He was quickly apprehended by Nazi ground soldiers after parachuting to safety and landed in a woodland.
He was transferred to the Polish prisoner of war camp of Stalag Luft III, a Luftwaffe-run facility for captured Allied Air Force soldiers.
During his incarceration, Jefferson claims that his German captors treated him like any other Air Force officer.
