Alberto da Costa e Silva, a diplomat, poet, and historian from Brazil, was the 2014 Camões Prize recipient. He lived 92 years, from the time of his birth on May 12, 1931, until his death on November 26, 2023.

Alberto da Costa e Silva is the son of Creusa Fontenelle de Vasconcellos da Costa e Silva and poet Antônio Francisco da Costa e Silva. Unfortunately, little information about his parents is currently accessible. However, Macio, Mario, and Benedicto are his three half-brothers.
After completing his studies at the Rio Branco Institute in 1957, Alberto da Costa e Silva worked as a diplomat in Nigeria, Benin, Portugal, Colombia, and Paraguay, as well as in Lisbon, Caracas, Washington, Madrid, and Rome.
He served as ambassador to Asunción till 1995, Bogotá from 1992 to 1994, and Lisbon from 1989 to 1992. On July 27, 2000, he was chosen to serve as chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. In 2002 and 2003, he served as an entity’s president.
The Brazilian Writers Union (UBE) named him the “Intellectual of the Year” in 2004.
At the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, Alberto da Costa e Silva has a similar academic position. He was married to award-winning translator Vera Queiroz da Costa e Silva, who translated Chinua Achebe’s O Mundo se Pedaça.
