Alan Rankine, who was born on May 17, 1958, and died on January 20, 2023, was a Scottish musician and record producer best known as the keyboardist and guitarist for rock band the Associates, which he co-founded in the late 1970s with lead vocalist Billy Mackenzie.
Rankine started his career with the cabaret group Caspian, which later evolved into the Associates, while he was a child in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire. They collaborated to create three albums: The Affectionate Punch (1980), Fourth Drawer Down (1981), and Sulk (1982). On the eve of what would have been the Sulk tour in 1982, Rankine quit the group.
Rankine developed himself as a producer, working with musicians such as Paul Haig, Cocteau Twins, and the Pale Fountains, while Mackenzie continued with other associates. In 1986, he got a recording contract with the Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule and began a solo career. He released three solo studio albums: The World Begins to Look Her Age (1986), She Loves Me Not (1987), and The Big Picture Sucks (1989).
