African football fans are in for a treat next month as Al Ahly and Esperance gear up for an epic battle in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final.
These two giants of African club football secured their spots in the final with thrilling victories in the semi-finals.
Al Ahly had to dig deep to overcome TP Mazembe with a stunning 3-0 victory in Cairo, while Esperance held their nerve to edge out Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in Pretoria. Now, these powerhouses are set to face off in a two-legged final to determine the champion of African club football.
With 11 Champions League titles to their name, Al Ahly will be considered the favorites as they aim for their fourth crown in five years. However, Esperance cannot be underestimated, especially after their surprise victory over Al Ahly in the 2018 final.
The first leg of the final will take place in Tunis on May 18, with the return leg in Cairo a week later. Fans can expect a monumental clash between two seasoned contenders who are hungry for victory.
Al Ahly’s star-studded lineup, led by Percy Tau, showed their mettle in the semi-finals with a comeback win against Mazembe. On the other hand, Esperance, guided by coach Miguel Cardoso, displayed resilience and tactical prowess in their triumph over Sundowns.
Goalkeeper Amanullah Memmich, who shone in the semi-finals, will be crucial to Esperance’s chances of pulling off an upset against the formidable Al Ahly.
