Sampson Ahi, the Bodi member of parliament, has charged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with breaking constitutional requirements that require a regional balance in the makeup of the cabinet.
He voiced his worries over the Western North Region’s lack of representation in Cabinet as a result of the dismissal of Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie.
During a news conference on Wednesday, February 14, in Accra, Mr. Ahi expressed his complaints and said that traditional chiefs and people living in the Western North Region were becoming dissatisfied with the situation.
“The Constitution enjoins the president to consider regional balance when composing his cabinet, and so we are not happy. We thought that, having sacked Dr. Kwaku Afriyie from the Western North, he would have appointed another person from the Western North to replace him, but that did not happen.
“Also, when you go through the list of deputy ministers, we don’t have anyone from the Western North,” he stressed.
In a significant shake-up of the cabinet on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo removed 10 lawmakers and 13 ministers from their positions effective immediately.
Ministers Ken Ofori Atta of Finance, Ambrose Dery of Interior, Kwaku Agyemang Manu of Health, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie of Environment, Science, and Technology, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah of Information, and Kwasi Amoako-Atta of Roads and Highways are among those impacted.
