Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has tasked President Nana Akufo-Addo with reforming his administration and style of governance in line with what Parliament has done.

His comments follow the introduction of new Standing Orders by Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin, which will fundamentally alter the way business is conducted in Parliament.

According to the orders, when proceedings begin, Members of Parliament (MPs) must participate in a rollcall and recite the National Pledge.

The Minority Leader asserted during a leadership press briefing that President Akufo-Addo needs to have his governance style modified because it is inadequate.

In reference to the President’s anticipated State of the Nation Address at the end of the month, Dr. Forson emphasized that Members of Parliament will offer factual commentary on the current status of the economy.

He emphasized that the country is not comfortable with some of the actions taken, and that the Akufo-Addo-led government ought to implement similar reforms as the Parliament has.

We cannot allow Ghanaians to lose faith in our democracy, which is why I called on His Excellency the President and Vice President to reform their governments yesterday as well.

“Therefore, in order for this democracy to succeed, we also need to reform how governance is carried out. I use this opportunity to once again call on His Excellency the President to reform both his style of governance and the way governance is carried out in this nation,” he stated.

On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, President Akufo-Addo is scheduled to present the State of the Nation address to Parliament.

As required by Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, the President is required to deliver an annual address on the state of the nation at the opening of each session and prior to the dissolution of Parliament.

The speech is expected to provide an overview of the government’s main policy goals for the coming year and provide insight into the tactics being used to address the state of the economy.
