Former President John Mahama has raised concerns about the current state of Ghana’s democracy under the leadership of the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. In a tweet posted on X on Monday, April 15, Mr Mahama criticized the government for prioritizing political expediency over the country’s democratic principles.

According to the NDC flagbearer, the Akufo-Addo administration has “crossed many red lines” in Ghana’s democratic practice, which has had negative effects on the nation. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the country’s democratic foundations and reversing the current trend that puts political convenience above democratic consolidation.

Mr Mahama expressed his concerns about the government’s actions and called for significant efforts to protect and advance Ghana’s democratic values. He highlighted the need for Ghana to uphold its democratic principles and ensure the prosperity of the 4th Republic.

The former President’s comments come amidst growing concerns about the state of democracy in Ghana and the need to safeguard its democratic institutions. As the country prepares for the upcoming election, the importance of upholding democratic values and principles has become a critical issue for all stakeholders.

It is imperative for the government to address these concerns and work towards strengthening Ghana’s democratic foundations to ensure the continued growth and development of the country. As the 4th Republic faces challenges, it is essential for all political parties and leaders to prioritize democratic consolidation and uphold the values that Ghana was founded upon.
