Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the current Akufo-Addo government for its handling of the small-scale mining sector in Ghana.

Speaking at the ‘3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining’ at the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani, Mr. Mahama accused the government of favouring its allies over the growth and development of the sector.

He expressed his disappointment with the government’s approach, stating that it seemed to target specific individuals rather than addressing the broader issues within the sector. Mr. Mahama emphasized the need for inclusive policies that benefit all stakeholders, not just a select few.

The former president proposed strategies for addressing the challenges in the small-scale mining sector, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices, community involvement, and access to financial resources for miners. He pledged to introduce new initiatives to ensure a responsible and prosperous small-scale mining sector in Ghana.

Mr. Mahama’s remarks come at a time when stakeholders are calling for comprehensive reforms to tackle issues of environmental degradation, illegal mining activities, and socioeconomic disparities in the sector. He reiterated his commitment to implementing policies that prioritize the well-being of all Ghanaians and promote equitable benefits for everyone involved in small-scale mining.

It is clear that Mr. Mahama is determined to address the long-standing issues in the small-scale mining sector and ensure that Ghana’s natural resources benefit the entire nation, not just a select few. His proposals and initiatives signal a fresh vision for the sector, one that prioritizes sustainability, responsibility, and prosperity for all stakeholders.
