President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is urging the heads of public utility providers to enhance the efficiency and reliability of their services to reduce costs.

This call was made during the commissioning ceremony of the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant in the Ashanti Region.

In his speech, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of the Ashanti regional minister’s support in ensuring the efficiency and safety of the power station. He also challenged the heads of public utilities, especially the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to prioritize efficiency and reliability to mitigate the occurrence of unreliable power supply, known locally as ‘dumsor’.

The President commended stakeholders in the power sector, including the ECG, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), and the Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC), for their efforts in the successful completion of the K1TPP project. Additionally, he disclosed that the Volta River Authority (VRA) provided all the funding for the construction of the power plant.

Under a five-year “built, own, operate, and transfer” agreement, the African and Middle East Resources Investment (AMERI) Group has handed over the 10-unit power plants to the government of Ghana following the completion of the stipulated duration. President Akufo-Addo lauded the VRA for demonstrating that Ghanaian engineers from a publicly-owned institution can deliver engineering solutions to propel national development.

The President’s call for improved efficiency and reliability in the public utility sector underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing service delivery and reducing costs for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
