Former President John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns about the state of democracy in Ghana under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer accused the current administration of prioritizing political convenience over democratic consolidation, which he believes has had a negative impact on the country.

In a post on his X platform, Mahama criticized the Akufo-Addo government for what he described as crossing many red lines in Ghana’s democratic practice. He highlighted the detrimental effects of putting political interests ahead of democratic values, emphasizing that it has left Ghana’s 4th Republic in a poorer state.

Furthermore, Mahama expressed apprehension about the targeting of businesses owned by political opponents by African governments. He asserted that such actions hinder the growth of rich African businesses and called on governments to refrain from destroying businesses based on political affiliations.

Speaking at the Afro-heritage Conference and Awards in Lagos, Nigeria, Mahama emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment for African businesspeople to succeed without the fear of government interference. He urged African leaders to invest in young people and foster innovation that will benefit ordinary citizens on the continent.

Mahama’s remarks underscore the importance of upholding democratic principles and creating a conducive environment for economic growth and development in Ghana and across Africa. It is crucial for governments to prioritize the well-being of their citizens and promote a culture of inclusivity and prosperity for all.
