The Chairman of Parliament’s Assurance Committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed his disappointment with Housing Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah’s approach during a recent committee session. Ablakwa criticized the Minister’s attitude towards providing relief measures after the Akosombo Dam spillage disaster, describing it as unsatisfactory.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnite, Ablakwa questioned the government’s handling of the situation, emphasizing the need for urgent action to address the plight of those affected by the spillage. He also highlighted the delays in project completion by government contractors and the lack of urgency in responding to the crisis.

Tensions escalated between the two legislators during the session, with Ablakwa calling out the Minister for deflecting questions and failing to prioritize the needs of the affected communities. In response, Oppong Nkrumah accused Ablakwa of creating a negative perception and insinuated that the Chairman was not showing the necessary respect.

Ablakwa, asserting his authority as the committee chair, emphasized the importance of finding a solution to the ongoing crisis and stated that the committee would demand a new approach and attitude from the government. He stressed that a year is too long for excuses and delays in addressing the challenges faced by the displaced individuals.

The legislator hinted at bringing the issue to the floor for further deliberation through a report to the plenary, emphasizing the need for a more proactive and decisive response from the Housing Ministry. Ablakwa’s call for action and accountability reflects the growing discontent over the government’s handling of the Akosombo Dam spillage disaster.
