Ahmad Jamal was well-known for his easygoing personality and effect on Miles Davis, who famously claimed, “All my inspiration comes from Ahmad Jamal.”Ahmad Jamal, whose controlled, sparse piano technique inspired generations of jazz performers, passed away on Sunday at his home in Ashley Falls, Massachusetts. He was 92.
According to his daughter, Sumayah Jamal, the cause was prostate cancer.
Mr. Jamal made a lasting influence on jazz with a stately style that honored what he termed the voids in the music throughout a career that earned him a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master award, a lifetime achievement Grammy, and entry into France’s Order of Arts and Letters.
That approach contrasted sharply with the difficultly sophisticated music known as bebop, which was sweeping the jazz world when Mr. Jamal began his career as a teenager in the mid-1940s. Following in the footsteps of Bud Powell, bebop pianists became noted for their virtuoso note flurries. Mr. Jamal took a different approach that was equally influential.
