The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr Richard Ahiagbah has voiced his concerns about a recent train accident on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, suspecting sabotage.
The incident occurred during a Site Acceptance Test of the Diesel Multiple Unit train, where an unmanned truck obstructed the railway, causing the train to derail.
Despite this setback, Ahiagbah emphasized that the government remains committed to reviving and leveraging rail transport to advance development in the country. He commended Hon. John Peter Amewu and his team for their efforts in driving the vision of President Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia in this regard.
The Ministry of Railways Development confirmed the collision between the new DMU train and a stationary vehicle on the Tema Railway line during the site acceptance test. The train encountered the vehicle blocking the track at a curve, and despite applying emergency brakes, it was unable to avoid a collision.
The Ministry clarified that the location where the vehicle was found was not designated as an authorized level crossing, indicating that the driver of the Hyundai truck with registration number GS 9018 – 20 acted negligently. The Ghana Police Service has arrested the driver for allegedly causing the accident, and investigations are ongoing.
This unfortunate incident highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols and regulations on railway tracks to prevent such accidents in the future.
