Ahead of the African Games in Accra in 2023, Team Ghana received some GHS10,000 worth of donations from the Ghana Sports Movement (GSM), an organization made up of representatives from the Christian community in Ghana.
At the team’s pre-tournament camp at the University of Ghana Campus last Sunday, the donation—which included Bibles, daily devotionals, fruits, and water bottles—was given.
The Ghana Evangelical Missions Association President and GSM member, Reverend Ray Mensah, encouraged the athletes to be self-motivated, disciplined, and prayerful in order to reach their objectives during the ceremony.
He stated that the donation was intended to console Team Ghana members for their sacrifices made on behalf of the country in sporting events and to provide them with spiritual support.
Rev. Mensah emphasized the value of self-leadership and discipline, saying that athletes could not succeed with just “ways and means” in the absence of these attributes.
Additionally, he said that the team was ready to use Zoom to conduct daily prayer sessions for the competitors.
After accepting the goods on behalf of Team Ghana, Chef de Mission Ernest Danso thanked the GSM and urged other organizations to follow suit.
Although other federations had not yet finalized their contingents, he pointed out that there were now roughly 400 athletes in the camp.
Mr. Danso declared that on February 25, 2024, Ghana would reveal its final roster and select its team captain.
He expressed optimism that the March 8–23 African Games in Accra, 2023, will raise awareness of the nation’s underfunded sports.
