Africa Development Council urges ECOWAS action amid Togo’s constitutional crisis

Togo’s president, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, has come under scrutiny from the Africa Development Council (ADC) for his proposed constitutional reforms that have sparked a constitutional crisis in the country.

The ADC has strongly condemned the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for its inaction in addressing the crisis in Togo. The council labeled President Faure Gnassingbé’s proposed reforms as a “Constitutional Coup” and called for immediate intervention from both ECOWAS and the African Union (AU).

ADC President, Ing. Dr. Bright Atsu Sogbey, emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning of potential political turmoil in Togo if decisive action is not taken promptly. The council asserted that ECOWAS leadership would bear responsibility for any escalation of the crisis in the coming days or months.

Drawing attention to recent events in Senegal, where former President Macky Sall faced public backlash leading to his departure from office, the ADC advised President Gnassingbé to heed the voice of the people to avoid a similar fate.

Furthermore, the council called for an end to what it described as the influence of Western powers in African affairs, advocating for a more equitable partnership between Africa and the rest of the world. In a call to action directed at ECOWAS, the ADC stressed the importance of restoring the organization’s reputation and dispelling perceptions of subservience to Western interests.

The ADC’s statement serves as a rallying cry for regional and continental bodies to address the pressing issues facing Togo and other African nations, advocating for collective action in pursuit of stability, democracy, and prosperity on the continent.

The Africa Development Council (ADC) is a non-profit organization founded to promote sustainable industrial development in Africa. The council works with various stakeholders, including African governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and international partners, with a vision to transform Africa from a loan-dependent continent to a self-sufficient one through sustainable industrial development.

The ADC’s mission is to promote innovative industrial solutions to Africa’s most pressing challenges, building the capacity of African businesses and advocating for policies that support industrial development on the continent.
