Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the deputy majority leader, has stopped the anti-LGBTQ bill’s third reading.
Had he not moved, the contentious measure would have been passed on this day.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin says he supports the Ghanaian Family Values bill and is not blatantly against the concepts of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights.
However, the lawmaker states that he is against the clause that would put those in jail who are charged with supporting or participating in LGBTQ activities.
He claimed that the harsh measures in the law would not help the offenders get back on their feet. Sam George, one of the bill’s sponsors, has stated that Mr. Markin’s reasoning is unconvincing.
