Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars, has taken responsibility for Ghana’s last-minute collapse against Mozambique, which has the team facing yet another group stage elimination at the Africa Cup of Nations.
In their final Group B match on Monday night at the Olympic Stadium in Abidjan, the Stars let up a two-goal advantage in the space of six minutes, drawing 2-2 with Mozambique.
Due to the outcome, the stars are now only two points out of first place in the group and will need to pull off a miraculous comeback to secure a spot among the top four teams.
Hughton said, “I take responsibility for this performance and admit my results with the Black Stars have not been good enough,” during the news conference following the game. He did not, however, actually step down from his role.
Maybe he refrained from quitting right away since there is a remote possibility the Black Stars will advance to the next round if other outcomes align with their expectations.
Ghana, who is now rated fifth among the third-place teams, can only advance if Cameroon, Zambia, and Algeria all lose their remaining group matches. Zambia will play DR Congo, Cameroon will play Gambia, and Algeria will play Mauritania.
