Ghana coach Chris Hughton came under fire for replacing Osman Bukari following a costly error in their 2-2 draw against Egypt in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (2023 AFCON).
Ghana’s defensive troubles caused them to lose the lead twice, with Bukari, who had replaced Inaki Williams, squandering possession for Egypt’s second equalizer. Despite Williams making a similar mistake before, Hughton supported his decision to replace Bukari.
Hughton reaffirmed his belief in Bukari, emphasizing the player’s significant appearances off the bench, including a memorable World Cup goal against Portugal. However, he admitted that the emotional intensity of the game appeared to influence Bukari’s performance following the error.
The coach praised Bukari as a committed and honest player and made it clear that the decision was not a reflection of any worries about his character or dedication. Hughton clarified that, depending on the game’s developing dynamics, coaches occasionally have to make difficult choices.
