The Black Stars of Ghana, who placed third in Group B of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), are one of two teams who will get a $700,000 consolation prize.
Despite not making it to the elimination rounds, their efforts earned them a portion of the $34.6 million prize fund for the competition.
Following two 2-2 draws with Egypt and Mozambique, the Black Stars’ tournament trip included a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, the eventual winners of Group B. With Egypt and Cape Verde trailing them but Mozambique leading, this put them in third place in the group. Since only four of the third-placed teams may advance further in the competition, Zambia was one of the two teams that finished third but were unable to qualify.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released a statement yesterday outlining the 24 participating clubs’ allocation of the $34.6 million in prize money.
The eight teams who go past the round of 16 will win $800,000 apiece, while the six teams that place lowest (fourth) in each of the six groups will receive $500,000.
For their efforts, the two losing semi-finalists will win $2.5 million, and the four losing quarterfinalists will receive $1,300,000.
Following Sunday, February 11, 2024, as the competition closes, the losing finalist will be awarded $4 million, while the winner will take home $7 million.
Four important international football tournaments, including the simultaneous AFC Asian Cup 2023 and AFCON 2023, are scheduled to enthrall football fans in 2024. Germany will host Euro 2024 later in the year, and South America will host Copa America 2024 after that.
With $5 million going to the victor and $3 million going to the runner-up, the AFC Asian Cup offers somewhat less in prize money than the AFCON.
