Senior Presidential Advisor, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, has come under scrutiny from Edem Senanu, the Co-chair of the Citizen Movement against Corruption, for failing to take action in addressing the shortcomings of Ghana’s asset declaration law.

In a recent interview on 3FM, Mr. Senanu highlighted the lack of transparency in the current asset declaration regime in Ghana.

He emphasized the need for Mr. Osafo-Maafo to use his political position to push for a review of the law, pointing out that Ghana’s system pales in comparison to that of Nigeria, which boasts a more comprehensive framework for public officials to declare their assets.

Describing the current asset declaration law as “toothless”, Mr. Senanu urged for immediate action to strengthen the legislation and ensure accountability among public officials.

He lamented the apparent lack of political will to drive the necessary reforms, noting that if there was a genuine commitment to combatting corruption, the review would have been initiated by now.

Mr. Senanu underscored the importance of continuous policy and legal reforms to address changing circumstances and uphold integrity in governance.

He called on the government to prioritize the review of the asset declaration law to prevent fraudulent acquisition of assets and promote good governance for the benefit of all citizens.

It remains to be seen whether Mr. Osafo-Maafo will heed these calls and champion the much-needed reforms to enhance transparency and accountability in Ghana’s public service.
