German actor and theatre director Achim Benning has passed away. He was director of the Burgtheater in Vienna from 1976 to 1986, and director of the Schauspielhaus Zürich from 1989 to 1992.

Achim Benning was born on January 20, 1935, in Magdeburg, Germany. He studied philosophy for five years, while simultaneously completing being trained for acting at the Max-Reinhardt-Academy in Berlin.
Achim Benning taught acting as Professor Emeritus at the Max-Reinhardt-Seminar (University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) from 1993 to 2003. From 1959, member of the Vienna Burgtheater, and, from 1971, active as director. Became director of the Schauspielhaus Zürich, 1989 to 1992.
“I didn’t want to become an actor; I didn’t want to become a director; I didn’t want to become Burgtheater director,” wrote Achim Benning in an autobiographical note.
At the age of 24, he was already playing at the Burgtheater, where he was seen in over 50 roles; From 1971 he also directed, and from 1976 to 1986 he was director of Haus am Ring. He then concentrated on directing, managing the Schauspielhaus Zurich from 1989 to 1992, and then being a professor of directing at the Max Reinhardt Seminar.
