The Africa Center for Digital Transformation (ACDT) has issued a warning to banks, savings and loans institutions, and rural banks in Ghana regarding the increased risk of cybercrime following a recent global tech failure.

In a statement signed by the Executive Director, Kwasi Atuahene, the ACDT highlighted that a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike resulted in widespread system failures across various sectors, including banking, aviation, and healthcare, on a global scale.

As a precautionary measure, the ACDT has alerted Ghanaian financial institutions to be wary of a fake CrowdStrike hotfix update that is circulating online. To mitigate the impact of the recent global IT outage and bolster their resilience against future incidents, the ACDT recommends that Ghanaian banks activate backup systems and redundancies.

Furthermore, the ACDT is continuously monitoring IT systems for any anomalies or security threats that may arise during the outage. By ensuring that cybersecurity measures are robust and operational, banks can prevent exploitation by malicious actors.

By implementing these proactive measures, banks in Ghana can minimize the impact of the outage, maintain customer trust, and enhance their preparedness for future incidents. The ACDT’s vigilance and guidance aim to safeguard Ghanaian financial institutions from potential cyber threats and disruptions.
