A man claiming to be a security operative, Benlord Ababio, has been remanded by the Achimota District Court for allegedly shooting and killing a soldier, Lance Corporal Michael Danso, in Kasoa over a land dispute.
Ababio, who also goes by the title Nana Barima Ababio as a self-proclaimed traditional ruler in Kasoa, has been charged with murder. The court did not accept his plea and he has been remanded into police custody until his next court appearance on May 16, 2024.
According to reports, on April 30, 2024, L/Cpl Danso and two colleagues went to the Millennium City police station to report a case of trespass after discovering encroachers on land belonging to one of the soldiers. It was at this time that Ababio allegedly confronted and fatally shot L/Cpl Danso while he was driving a Toyota Rav4.
Ababio was disarmed and arrested for further investigation, and the prosecution has requested the court to remand him for additional inquiries.
This incident has sparked outrage and condemnation from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for the unprovoked killing of one of their own. The community of Kasoa has been shaken by this tragic event, emphasizing the importance of resolving land disputes peacefully and legally.
As investigations continue into this senseless tragedy, the families of the victim and the accused await justice and closure.
