Academic work resumes at KNUST Basic School after suspension of strike

Following the suspension of the industrial action by the university’s senior staff and two other unions, academic activities have resumed at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Basic.

Following the strikes on February 1 by the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWUG), the Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG), and the Senior Staff Association of Public Universities in Ghana (SSA-UoG), teaching and learning at the school came to a standstill.

Following a meeting with the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission regarding the terms of service for their members, the unions called off the strike on Friday, February 9, 2024.

Despite the strike’s suspension, labor union members assert that if the employer breaks its end of the agreement, they won’t think twice about lifting the suspension and going back to work.

Josephine Philicity Apenyo Adom, a teacher at the Basic School and the KNUST local Women’s Commissioner of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, told Citi News that the strike has only been put on hold and that it can be called back at any time. She also urged the government to expedite the resolution of members’ demands in order to stop it from happening again.

“We are pressing the government to take the necessary action, and we have only suspended the strike, so we can return at any time. The government has promised that we should give it some time to have everything resolved.”

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana is unwavering in its resolve to hold onto its strike until all of its members’ concerns have been taken care of.

TEWUG is adamant that it will keep up the strike action until its worthy members receive their vehicle maintenance allowance.
