North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has taken a bold step in fighting against what he describes as the “unconscionable sale” of SSNIT’s stake in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong, Minister for Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi.
He has planned a demonstration scheduled for June 18, 2024, to protest this ongoing sale.
Ablakwa has revealed that despite his petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate and stop the sale, SSNIT is proceeding with the transaction. This has fueled his decision to organize a demonstration to protect Ghanaian workers’ interests.
In a recent interview with Joy FM, Ablakwa expressed the need for an amendment to the CHRAJ Act, 1993 [Act 456], to grant the commission injunctive powers in such matters. He believes that the current law does not empower CHRAJ to issue injunctions, allowing parties to proceed with questionable transactions.
Additionally, SSNIT has responded to Ablakwa’s allegations by stating that Rock City Hotel Limited presented the best offer for the purchase of SSNIT’s stake in the hotels. SSNIT claims that Rock City Hotel’s proposal was the strongest among those received, meeting both technical and financial criteria.
The demonstration planned by Ablakwa aims to raise awareness and protect national interests by preventing what he perceives as a detrimental deal for Ghanaian workers.
Ablakwa is determined to fight against the sale and ensure that the hotels remain in the hands of the people.
