It makes sense given Aaliyah’s track record that her name means “the highest, most exalted, the best.”

The name was chosen by her parents, Diane and Michael, based on the high aspirations and expectations they would have if they were to conceive a girl. The name of a real self-fulfilling prophesy thanks to her success as a recording artist and actress. Her wishes were fulfilled by Aaliyah. She had a very successful recording career when she was 22 and had also made a name for herself as an accomplished businesswoman and actor in the big screen.

Aaliyah discovered happiness in her music at a young age. When she was a youngster and placed second in the youth vocal competition on “Star Search,” she didn’t let that discourage her from singing.

In fact, at the age of 11, she was offered a five-night gig in Las Vegas performing with Gladys Knight. She was raised between Detroit and New York after being born in Brooklyn, New York, and eventually joined the Abrams Artists clientele. With a 4.0 GPA, she earned her diploma from the Detroit Performing Arts High School in 1997.

Parents and Siblings

She was the younger child of Diane and Michael “Miguel” Haughton, who worked in a warehouse. She had an older brother.

Spouse and Children

After “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number” was released, Aaliyah and R. Kelly’s relationship was the subject of rumors, including the claim that they had secretly wed without her parents’ knowledge. A marriage certificate that showed the couple as married on August 31, 1994, at the Sheraton Gateway Suites in Rosemont, Illinois, was later made public by Vibe magazine. The certificate listed R. Kelly as 27 and Aaliyah, who was 15 at the time, as 18. Her parents declared the union null and void in February 1995, but the couple vehemently refuted the accusations, claiming that neither of them had ever been wed and that the certificate in question was a fabrication.

She allegedly had an abortion when she was alive. She never became a mother.
