Three days after casting his vote against a measure that would have codified safeguards for same-sex marriage, a Republican congressman attended the wedding of his gay son last week.
Glenn “GT” Thompson’s gay son revealed to NBC News on Monday that he wed the love of his life on Friday and that his “father was there.”
Glenn Thompson is a Republican from Pennsylvania.
The congressman and his wife were overjoyed to attend and celebrate their son’s marriage on Friday night as he started this new chapter in his life, according to a statement from Thompson’s press secretary, which also verified that he was there.
The Thompsons are “extremely thrilled” to welcome their new son-in-law “into their family,” according to his press secretary.
Reports in the media have not given the names of Thompson’s son and new son-in-law.
Thompson was one of 157 House Republicans who voted against the bill, which would have codified the right to same-sex and interracial marriages nationally, despite the fact that he agreed with it.
Due to concerns that the Supreme Court would invalidate same-sex marriage, 47 Republicans joined Democrats in the bipartisan measure.
