According to Liz Truss, the new leader of the Conservative Party, a general election is not expected to happen anytime soon.
She was declared the winner of the leadership race this afternoon, which means she will take office as prime minister of the UK tomorrow.
Some had predicted that, like her predecessor Theresa May, she would call an early general election.
However, it appears that this won’t happen as she spoke of a “big victory” for the Conservatives in 2024 in her speech of acceptance today.
She gave a speech thanking Tory party members for voting for her after defeating competitor Rishi Sunak.
She didn’t have to provide an election date, but she did so anyway.
“We all will deliver for our country,” the new Tory leader declared.
“I’ll make sure we use all the fantastic talents of the Conservative Party, our outstanding Members of Parliament and peers, our outstanding councillors, our MSs, our MSPs, all of our councillors and activists and members right across our country.”
