A hug moment would have stopped Oscar slap

Speaking at an Emmy preview event in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, the SNL comedian commented on the notorious physical altercation between Oscars presenter Chris Rock and Will Smith, as well as the dangers of ‘roasting’ at award events in general.

“I believe a good comic should be informed,” Thompson stated. “I mean, I’m not calling Chris a poor comedian; he simply wasn’t necessarily conscious of the circumstances, so lumping him into that discourse isn’t fair.” But, in general, those roast-y types require caution, since there is a way to poke fun at somebody without offending them, like for real. I don’t believe that insult gets us anywhere as a society.”

Smith uploaded an apologetic video online in July, but at stand-up concert in London  last weekend, Rock compared it to “hostage video.”
That (literally) show-stopping event, in Thompson’s perspective, could have been settled swiftly.
“I feel like hug would have put stop to all of that, you know what mean?”
Thompson explained.
“But it was so incomprehensible that [Rock] had no idea it was coming.”
He never dreamed in his wildest fantasies that his 30-plus-year pal would do something like that.”

Thompson plans to make sure everyone gets and enjoys the joke when he takes the stage at the Microsoft Theater on Monday night, the Emmys’ first visit to that venue since the outbreak.
