Three soldiers and six other people have been found guilty of high treason and sentenced to death by hanging.
They were found guilty on Wednesday afternoon by the Accra High Court of conspiring to topple the government.
Godfred Yeboah Dame, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice spoke to the media following the ruling and clarified the gravity of the coup plot.
The court’s ruling exposed a heinous plot in which the convicted individuals carefully plotted President Akufo-Addo’s assassination in addition to trying to topple the government.
The complex scheme included enlisting military officers, planning assassination plans for the president, and planning acts of violence against other people. The substantial threat that the guilty persons represented to the democratic stability of the country is shown by the seriousness of the offenses they committed.
The sentence acts as a harsh warning to anyone attempting to subvert the constitutional system, making it clear that such acts will have dire repercussions to protect the country’s democratic values.
