American football quarterback Dwayne Haskins has died in a tragic incident, aged 24.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback met his untimely death on Saturday, April 9, 2022, after he was smashed by a dump truck while he was walking on a South Florida highway.

According to Lt. Indiana Miranda, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman, Haskins was pronounced dead on the spot.

In a statement, Miranda disclosed: “He [Dwayne Haskins] was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic,”  said in an emailed statement.

Miranda didn’t say why Haskins was on the highway at the time. The accident caused the highway to be shut down for several hours, and Miranda said it’s “an open traffic homicide investigation.”

Haskins was training in South Florida with other Steelers quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers.

Reacting to his death, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement: “I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins.”

“He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time,” he added.

Meet Dwayne Haskins parents

Dwayne was raised by his parents Tamara Haskins and Dwayne Haskins Sr. His parents are from a decent background and they played an influential role in their son’s footballing career.

According to reports, his mother, Tamara Haskins, is an Agent licensed to sell insurance through New York Life Insurance Company.

Three years ago, Dwayne’s father disclosed that he is in the entertainment industry.

When asked about his son’s growing up in Florida, he responded: “I’m familiar with aspects of reporters. I have an entertainment background. For me, I want the content to be consistent with our family core values. For me to participate in an interview, I want to make sure it’s accurate.

What I came to realize throughout this process over the last 10 years, there are sources that are just not credible. They are self-serving and promoting to use Dwayne’s likeness.

For me to participate, I need to know more in detail, who did you talk to? Because a two-minute or two-day encounter doesn’t define a relationship or know the core values or our faith and how we operate.”
