
Brendan Mooney, a former Irish Examiner sports journalist, died on Thursday evening, and tributes have been made to him. Mooney, a native of Ballinabrackey, Meath, died in Cork after a brief illness.
Mooney began his journalism career with the Westmeath Examiner before moving to the Cork Examiner, where he covered incidents such as the Betelguese fire tragedy at the Whiddy Island oil facility in Bantry Bay and the Heremma kidnapping and standoff in Kildare.
Following that, he became a sports reporter, covering every Olympic Games from 1976 in Montreal until 2012 in London. During the Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche era, he also covered the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia.
Mooney was a sprinter who won All-Ireland races in the 100m, 200m, and 400m. He also played GAA and rugby.
