Joey Beauchamp, a former Oxford United football star, has passed away. He died on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the age of 50.
Oxford United confirmed the news of his passing in a statement saying: “The thoughts of everyone at Oxford United are with the family and friends of Joey Beauchamp who has passed away aged 50.”
The statement added: “The club will pay fitting tribute to one of its greatest ever players in due course but for now we ask fans to allow Joey’s family some privacy at this incredibly sad time.”
Beauchamp appeared 428 times for Oxford across two spells. He is widely regarded as one of their most talented ever players to play for the League One club.
In 1987, Beauchamp signed with his hometown club as a YTS trainee and was sold to Premier League side West Ham in 1994 for a then club-record fee of £1.2m.
However, the winger did not play a competitive match for the Hammers, as he switched to Swindon just a couple of months later to be closer to his family.

“I went to Sporting Chance clinic and saw someone there. I was in quite a bad way at one point. But I’ve come through it, I’ve had the strength to get through it. I’m lucky, because some people don’t.
“Now I’m enjoying life, it couldn’t be much better. I look back on my life with great pride. Would I have changed things? Yes, I could possibly go back and wish I’d gone to London, put everything into it, gone on to be a Premier League star and played for England,” he added.
