Ghana’s Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has been appointed to lead a team of education experts in Africa to support the African Union’s (AU) education reforms. This initiative, championed by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, aims to develop a blueprint for improving education across the continent to combat poverty and foster national development.
During a panel discussion at the Foundational Learning conference organized by Human Capital Africa (HCA) in Accra, Mr Obasanjo highlighted the crucial role of education in Africa’s transformation and emphasized the need for long-term investment in education. The event, themed “Prioritizing Foundational Literacy and Numeracy to Achieve African Union Agenda 2063 goals,” brought together key stakeholders in education from various African countries.
Among the distinguished guests at the conference were President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Presidents Joyce Banda of Malawi and Jakaya Mrisho Kiawete of Tanzania, as well as renowned personalities like Aliko Dangote and Ellen Sirleaf Johnson. The discussions centered on the importance of foundational learning and the necessity for strategic planning to address each country’s specific educational needs.
Dr Adutwum, in response to questions during the panel discussion, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive education strategic plan for Africa. He stressed the need for collaboration among African nations to identify and address their unique educational challenges effectively.
Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili, the Founder and CEO of Human Capital Africa, called for a collective effort from all stakeholders to support educational development on the continent. She underscored the significance of foundational learning in laying a solid educational foundation for quality education.
The conference also highlighted the vital role of teachers in the educational system, with Mr Obasanjo challenging African countries to prioritize the welfare of teachers. Recognizing Ghana’s efforts in educational interventions, Mr Obasanjo commended the country for its initiatives that are contributing to economic growth and improving educational outcomes.
