Ghana Premier League powerhouse, Asante Kotoko, is set to make a significant proposal at the upcoming Congress of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The proposal will seek to amend Article 26(5) of the Ghana Premier League Regulations, which currently limits the number of foreign players a club can register and field on match day.
As it stands, clubs are only allowed to register a maximum of five non-Ghanaian nationals in their squad, with no more than three of them eligible to make the matchday squad. However, Asante Kotoko is pushing for a change in this regulation.
According to reports from Angel Sports’ Saddick Adams, Asante Kotoko wants the regulation to be amended to allow for clubs to register and field more foreign players. The club is planning to kickstart the amendment process at the GFA Congress next month in hopes of garnering enough support for the proposed change.
In recent weeks, Asante Kotoko has already made moves to bolster their squad by signing three foreign players. One of the new signings, Samba O’Neil from Congo, made an impressive debut on Wednesday night and was named Man of the Match as Asante Kotoko secured a 2-1 victory over traditional rivals Hearts of Oak in the Democracy Cup.
Sources close to the club have revealed that Asante Kotoko intends to bring in more foreign players to strengthen their team ahead of the 2024/25 football season. By seeking to amend the regulations, Asante Kotoko aims to have more flexibility in building a competitive squad that can challenge for major honours in the Ghana Premier League.
