Ghanaian hiplife artist Barima Sidney has stated that he is willing to perform on campaign platforms for political parties and even compose campaign songs. In an interview on 3FM Drive, Barima Sidney expressed his confusion at the criticism faced by musicians who perform or compose songs for political parties.
The iconic musician emphasized that performing for political parties is simply a business transaction, similar to performing for friends or corporate organizations. As long as he is not dressed in party colors or holding a party flag, Barima Sidney sees no issue with performing at political events.
He went on to say, “Even as we sit here, if NDC invites me Sidney come and perform for us, I will go so far as you pay me,” indicating his willingness to work with any party that requests his services. When asked if he would compose campaign songs for political parties, Barima Sidney responded, “As for that one the money go big, it’s allowed.”
Despite being accused of writing songs such as ‘Papa No’ and ‘Our Money’ to criticize the NDC, Barima Sidney denied these claims. He clarified that the songs were not intended to ridicule any political party and urged Ghanaians to disregard such assertions.
Barima Sidney’s openness to performing at political events highlights the intersection of music and politics in Ghanaian society. As an influential figure in the hiplife genre, his stance on engaging with political parties through music is sure to spark conversations within the industry.
