Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial, revealed during court proceedings that he met with Attorney-General Godfred Dame to discuss what he believed to be the misuse of prosecutorial powers against innocent Ghanaians.
In his testimony on Thursday, June 20, Jakpa explained that he sought the meeting to address concerns about the arbitrary and unjust use of prosecutorial powers. He expressed his belief that many innocent Ghanaians were being unfairly targeted and hoped to persuade Dame to adopt a more equitable approach.
The meeting reportedly took place at the residence of Supreme Court Judge Justice Yonny Kulendi, who is Jakpa’s cousin. Jakpa explained that this familiar setting facilitated communication with the Attorney-General.
During cross-examination by Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, Jakpa reiterated his concerns about the misuse of power and defended his decision to seek a meeting with Dame. He also addressed allegations that WhatsApp messages submitted as evidence had been tampered with, claiming that the content was altered to misrepresent his communications.
The court had earlier admitted 68 WhatsApp messages exchanged between Jakpa and the Attorney-General. The presiding judge, Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, noted that the court reserves the right to determine the weight of this evidence.
