A flashy New York pastor, Lamor Whitehead, also known as the “Bling bishop,” has been sentenced to nine years in prison for various fraudulent schemes, including taking advantage of one of his followers.
Whitehead, 45, was found guilty of wire fraud, attempted wire fraud, attempted extortion, and making false statements to federal investigators.
Prosecutors revealed that Whitehead used his position as a religious leader to deceive people out of money in order to fund his lavish lifestyle. One of the most notable incidents involving Whitehead was in 2022 when he was robbed at gunpoint during a live-streamed sermon, with the thieves making off with $1 million worth of watches, diamonds, and emeralds.
Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, referred to Whitehead as a “con man” and stated that the sentencing marks the end of his “various schemes.” Whitehead, who led the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in Canarsie, New York, misled individuals with false promises and utilized their funds for extravagant purchases like fancy clothing and cars.
One victim, a member of Whitehead’s church, entrusted him with $90,000 – her life savings – under the belief that it would be used to buy a home for her. However, the money was instead spent on clothing and car payments. Whitehead also manipulated documents to obtain business loans and attempted to extort a Bronx businessman by falsely claiming to have connections to New York Mayor Eric Adams.
Despite the conviction, Whitehead’s lawyers have expressed their intention to challenge the outcome. Mayor Eric Adams mentioned on Monday, ahead of the sentencing, that Bishop Whitehead is in his prayers. This case sheds light on the importance of being cautious and vigilant, even with figures in positions of authority and trust.
