Former Black Stars coach CK Akonnor is optimistic about the future of the national team under the current coach, Otto Addo. The Black Stars recently secured two crucial victories in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic, reigniting their hopes of qualification for the tournament.
The team managed to secure an impressive away win against Mali in Bamako before returning to Kumasi to defeat Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium, marking a significant turnaround in their performance. These victories put an end to the Black Stars’ winless streak this year, after going seven games without a win.
Ghana, a four-time African champion, is now in pursuit of their fifth qualification to the World Cup. Akonnor, speaking to Channel One Sports, praised the team’s solid performance against Mali and the impressive goal-scoring display in the match against Central African Republic. He acknowledged that there are areas that need improvement but expressed confidence in the team’s future prospects.
As it stands, Ghana is currently in second place in Group I of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, accumulating 9 points from four games. The qualifying series is set to resume in March 2025, giving the Black Stars more opportunities to secure their spot in the prestigious tournament. The team’s recent victories have certainly bolstered their morale and aspirations for a successful campaign.
