The World Health Organization has confirmed the death of a 59-year-old Mexican resident from a new strain of bird flu. The individual passed away on April 24, showing symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath, diarrhoea, nausea, and general discomfort.
According to a WHO spokesperson, this is the first reported human case of infection with the influenza A(H5N2) virus globally, as well as the first A(H5) virus infection in Mexico. The victim had underlying health conditions, and health authorities in Mexico are currently investigating to determine how the individual was exposed to the virus.
Surprisingly, the victim had no history of contact with poultry or other animals, leading to questions about the source of the infection. Cases of the A(H5N2) subtype of avian influenza have been identified in poultry in Mexico.
Prior to experiencing acute symptoms, the person had been bedridden for three weeks for unrelated reasons. With fears of a human pandemic growing as the virus jumps to mammals, health authorities are urging caution and vigilance.
