Bawku Central Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has made a bold move by demanding transparency from the Bank of Ghana regarding the government’s indebtedness and financial losses.
Under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Ayariga has requested detailed information about the write-offs made by the Bank of Ghana, specifically the combined losses of approximately GHS 70 billion reported in the BoG’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023.
Acting on instructions from Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Ayariga is seeking explanations for these losses and an update on the escalating expenses related to the controversial head office building. The MP has given the Bank of Ghana a seven-day period to fulfill his demands as stipulated by the RTI Act.
In a statement, Ayariga highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in the financial dealings of the government and its institutions, stressing the importance of providing the public with accurate information. He specifically requested “detailed particulars of the status of the write-offs made in respect of Government’s indebtedness to BoG” and “reasons for the combined losses of circa GHS70 billion as stated in the BoG’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023.”
This move by Mahama Ayariga demonstrates his commitment to upholding transparency and accountability in the financial sector, holding institutions like the Bank of Ghana accountable for their actions.
